New York State Now Has A Carpet Recycling Law

Part of our mission is to share with Hanford Bay residents and others information about new laws aimed at keeping plastics and other materials out of the landfills and incinerators.

For example, in December 2022, Governor Hochul signed a new law that will require carpet manufacturers to establish a program for the collection and recycling of discarded and unused carpeting. This program will start in January 2026 and prohibit carpet sales in New York unless the producers are participating in an approved industry-wide plan for recycling carpet or they have established their own program for its collection and recycling that has been approved by the State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Carpets often contain various forms of plastics and without a law such as this one, an estimated 3.9 million tons of old carpet and rugs end up in landfills or incinerators in the U.S. annually.
